Did you know thatby 2025, there will be aglobal demand for lithiumof around 814,000 metric tons? The demand is higher than ever, but lithium mining companies and producers are currently struggling to meet the demands.
And you know what they say about products in high demand and low supply - they are worth more money! Whichin turn means that the lithium mining industryis profitable.
So, sit back and allow us to introduce you to your next (and maybe your smartest) career move!
Pipe down and listen up class! For those of you who didn't listen in chemistry class, lithium is a soft alkali metal.
Lithium is used for a whole range of products, including ceramics, glass, electronics, air conditioners, medicines, and batteries.
Why is this light metal in such high demand and why is it being so aggressively mined?
According to a2018 US Geological Survey, rechargeable lithium batteries make up 46% of the demand, whilst ceramics and glass make up 27% and various industrial uses make up the rest of the demand.
Undoubtedly, the increase in technology is driving a big part of this demand. The good news (for those in or thinking about a career in the lithium mining process) is that technology is here to stay, so the demand will continue to rise.
Where is Lithium Found and What is the Lithium Mining Process?
Lithium hot-spots can be found in Australia, Chile, Argentina, China, and Zimbabwe. These 5 locations produced 98.4% of the total lithium mined in 2017.
It is estimated that 87% of lithium is extracted through a process known as Brine Mining. Whilst the other 13% of lithium is extracted through traditional mining operations.
Brine Mining is where lithium is extracted via evaporating brine water from briny lakes, also known as salars.
Evaporating the water leaves behind lithium carbonate, and magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium.
This process is lengthier than traditionalhard rock mining, as it takes between 8 months and 3 years - but it is also cheaper and easier.
Brine Mining is particularly popular in Argentina and Chile, due to high concentrations ofsalars.
Traditional mining operations are used for about 13% of lithium extraction. High concentrations of lithium are often found within hard rock mines.
Traditional Mining of lithium can cost more to operate and can cause greater environmental and geological impact than Brine Mining.
